A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT ABOUT OUR FOUNDER |
It has been over 60 years since our founder, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, passed and left his mark in the Horror Genre. His writings have inspired some of our most famous modern sources of Horror fiction within the entertainment realm. Writers such as Stephen King, Clive Barker and Brian Lumly have followed in the footsteps of Lovecraft through their works dealing with otherworldly creatures inhabiting the cracks in the air around us. Themes centering around a dismal chaos that surrounds our environment behind the threshold of sanity are behind the works of H.P. Lovecraft. His works have inspired movies such as Evil Dead and Re-Animator to collections of works by specific writer/directors such as John Carpenter (In The Mouth of Madness and Halloween). Influences have even been tied to classics like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to alien encounter movies like Alien (I suggest Necronomicon: The Journal of Horror and Erotic Cinema, edited by Andy Black for anyone interested in researching this). His works have even fooled people for the majority of this century around the topic of the occult. For example, the book created by him - NECRONOMICON, has been used in many movies, books and even comic books. For some time, people believed that this "book of the dead" actually existed when it was never really fabricated. Even the Avon publishing: NECRONOMICON is not the authentic tome Lovecraft described written by the Mad Arab Abdul Alhazred. Regardless of it being an excellent piece of fiction, how many of us have heard of the book or even own a copy? According to the Encyclopedia of Witches and Witchcraft, no such book was made and that all copies published now are bogus. Yet, although its falsehood it still enthralls the Horror market. For more detail on the Necronomicon please go to the LIBRARY and look under the Special Collections area. As early as my memory serves me, I could see Lovecraftian ideas being set around me. As a child, watching Ghostbusters (the cartoon series) every Saturday morning, I was shocked to see two episodes revolving around two Mythos creatures Lovecraft introduced to us: AZATHOTH and CTHULHU. Now, a game exists (a very good one at that), a card game, and now there is some talk of a television show completely dedicated to episodes of his works (staying in the genre of The Twilight Zone). This is a site dedicated to the idea of the university that was behind the expeditions of Lovecraft's imagination. A collective site for writers, gamers, and artists to contribute to the university as if they were a part of it. Dependent upon contribution (in the form of written expeditions, images, or scholarly work) the student will develop to higher status in the University Directory as a Senior Student, Club head, Society head, Teaching Assistant, Professor, Head of a Department or perhaps even Professor Emeritus or Trustee. Other forms of contributions would be synopses and interpretations of Lovecraft's works (please, limit to Lovecraft stories that are over 30 pages) or just letting your mind roam and eventually finding its way back to the threshold just to tell us what happened. I will make Miskatonic University in the style of the 1920's and eventually expand it to two pages - one in the 1920's and one in the 1990's. Further announcements will be posted. I hope you enjoy your visit to our lovely university. In Memorium to Howard Phillips Lovecraft - 1890 - 1937.
